Her first book from the series The Life of Riley, Things that bite in the night, won it’s first award in September 2023.
The Awards was from New York City Big Books Awards and Independent Press NYC for Children Books in the category of Pets and Animals, for structure and story line.
This also earnt Deboarh and Riley as spot on the big screen at Time Square NYC for 20 seconds every hour for 24 hours on 20 December 2023.

Things that bite in the Night is the first picture book in the Life of Riley series by Deborah Tant. This children’s book is a bedtime story with a charming lesson for kids set in Queensland, Australia. We meet Riley and Monty-Moo, two young dogs whose grandmother warns them of the dangers of going out at night because “there are things that will surely bite”.
However, being the young puppies that they are, Riley and Monty-Moo decide to go out into the night. They went against Grandma Luppilou’s advice. Who do they meet, and how will they be able to make it home safely? Find out by reading this book.
I liked the cute and colourful illustrations showing Riley, the other characters, and the scenes. It was very refreshing to have a children’s book with an Australian twist to share with the kids in my life. I thought it was a very wholesome story. I also enjoyed the rhyming and repetition, which made it very fun to read aloud to the kids. It’s clear that the author is a dog lover, and there’s a lovely picture of the real Riley at the end of the book, which is a nice touch.
I noticed a subtle change in the font styles partway through the book, but that didn’t affect my reading experience. There was no reason to deduct any stars.
I happily rate this book 5 out of 5 stars as there was nothing I could fault with this book. It was well illustrated with a clear story. The book was professionally edited and only had a few minor errors that can be easily ignored.
I recommend this picture book to parents or anyone caring for young children aged between 2 and 8 years old. This is a fantastic bedtime story with a good lesson for children to learn.
